1996 - Creation of the bandEven though the band has been founded rather by chance: while visiting a concert one day in 1996 Dorian (guitar) met Jarlaath (voc.) and soon after they had rather introduced each other they found themselves philosophizing about metal in general and in particular. They realized that they had very much in common regarding their musical ideas. Both of them took the view that there are too many bands around sounding all more or less the same but not enough of them using classical music influences. So it happened that they arranged a rehearsal together with a soprano and a synthetizer. Jarlaath also played the oboe. This rehearsal went so outrageously fine that they decided without the slightest hesitation to leave their bands and to found Penumbra (at this point they called themselves Imperatoria).
1997 - Recording of the first demo - Concert in Paris with MisanthropeAround November of 1996, Imperatoria had a split and Jarlaath who is rapidly joined by Dorian and Herr Rikk, create Penumbra with three others musicians. Their first appareance was at the St. Denis University Festival where exclusively metal bands were playing. But the people unexpectectedly were absolutly enthusiastic about the “outsiders”. A short time after this first live experience they got the offer to play with the French metal band Misanthrope, and again, the respect they met were positive in every respect. Penumbra realized very soon though that the visual aspect of their shows played a very important role. Therefore they completed theirs shows with theatrical effects like costumes, pyrotechnic stakes etc. They realized their first demo the same year. Falling into my soul sold very well and they were regarded benevolently.
1998 - Recording of EmanateSummer 98, the recording of the album Emanate starts. Benedicte leaves the band and joins Misanthrope, she’s replaced at keyboards with Zoltan. Two sopranos and a baritone take part at the recording: Medusa, Elise and Aramis.
1999 - 2000 - Concerts in Paris, Pratteln, Leipzig…End of 98, Nicolas leaves the band and joins Forest of Souls, he will be temporarely replaced with Herr Rikk’s brother: David. Scyllia, a soprano, joins the line up. Begining of 99, Herr Rikk became the drummer of Temple of Baal and give up his place to Hekchen. A new bass-player, Aldric, came in the same time. The band takes part to some concerts: Boulogne, Paris, Orleans (France), Pratteln (Swiss) and to the 9th Leipzig festival where Penumbra was the only French band represented…
2001 - Recording of the second album The Last BewitchmentBegining of 2001, Scyllia decided to join another musical project and leaves Penumbra. Hekchen and Aldric leaves the formation too. April/May 2001, Garlic (drums) and Agone (bass guitar and backing vocals) came to the band. The recording of the album starts… End of 2001, The recording of The Last Bewitchment ends. Medusa leaves the band for any personal reasons. Public response about “The Last Bewitchment†was so great that Within Temptation decided to have Penumbra as a support band for their French tour. Penumbra played with them in Lille, Paris, Lyon Toulon and Bordeaux.The band played also with After Forever and many other bands in France and Netherlands to promote “The Last Bewitchmentâ€.
2003 – Seclusion The band is now ready to record Seclusion, Anita Covelli who sang on any tracks of “The Last Bewitchment†is chosen for this album. Garlic is replaced by Arathelis.But after the recording, Dorian decided to leave Penumbra definitely and Anita had a baby so it was impossible for her to tour with the band. Seclusion was released at the end of 2003 and once again, all the fans and press were very enthusiastic. But it was time for Penumbra to find any new musicians. Â
2004 - 2005 – New musicians, Penumbra’s revival
After a few month, guitarist Loïc joins the band with singer Lyrissa to promote Seclusion. The band is now very mature and ready to have a big tour.Penumbra played in all Europe with bands like Apocalyptica, Moonspell, Epica and many more…Each show is a great pleasure for the band and the fans are more and more numerous.
2006 – Asphodel… Penumbra is still playing in France and Netherlands to promote Seclusion when Asphodel is chosen to replace Lyrissa as the main singer of the band. She seems to be the definitely right person to fit perfectly with the musical style of Penumbra. Some new song are played live and the incoming album will probably be a great Penumbra’s act… To be continued…
